SANCO is the direct product of the proud civic tradition of the South African Black population. Throughout, their struggle against apartheid, the Black people of South Africa organised themselves into community groupings that simultaneously fought for a qualitative change in their social and community lives, the so-called ‘bread-and-butter’ issues, whilst tackling the overall political issues of apartheid. They called themselves civics.

PRESS STATEMENT

The South African National Civic Organization has followed the deliberations of the last few days on salary increases for public servants with great trepidation. We therefore appreciate the suspension of this strike. We hope that the partners will ensure that there is no need to embark on a public sector strike again on this matter. The challenge facing SANCO as a representative of civil society is that the employer employee posturing had only one immediate and direct casualty – and that is the ordinary, law abiding citizens of this country.

Attack on foreign nationals and their businesses.

SANCO has learned with regret the recent reports on the arrest of six persons who have looted the businesses of the foreign nationals in the Western Cape. We strongly condemn this act of terrorising the foreign nationals across the country. If there are issues that communities have against these people, communities are encouraged to speak to their community leadership structures without taking the law unto their hands.

Security structures are requested to persue those criminals. The department of Home Affairs and other relevant departments are however urged to attend to the concerns that communities have at local level without just playing the national perspectives.

We are willing to engage these departments in order to deal with the real issues on the ground that our people experience everyday.
