STATEMENT ON EDUCATION BY South African National Civic Organisation 2010
The SANCO has noted with concern that our schools still deliberately violate certain legal provisions in the provision of education. School uniform and dress code continue to be overlooked. We would like to call upon our education departments to ensure compliance with our laws and good conduct of school learners and educators.
There are specific issues which our education system is failing us. They are but not limited to;
Learners’ reports are still withheld for school fees and return of school books.
Rife creativity of learners’ marks under the guise of moderation is taking place.
School feeding scheme is not done according to the terms of reference.
No proper transport arrangements for those children qualifying to be transported.
Some educators are still capable to arrive after learners have arrived at schools.
Certain educators dress badly.
Certain children are not persuaded to dress properly.
There is a general tendency of schools to pass incompetent learners to higher grades.
Learners without parents behave like adults at school and outside schools.
General lack of discipline among learners.
Disunity of educators at certain schools.
Insubordination of certain educators.
Lower levels of commitment by certain educators and learners.
As a civic movement, we are concerned that good results will follow good conduct, commitment and dedication and therefore would like to call for all implicated to put shoulder to wheel under the guide of the department. We believe that regional education summits to deal with localised problems are necessary before the end of March 2010. We call upon our structures and SADTU to lobby their education departments in their regions for these summits.
